Spermatozoa were consistently found in greater numbers in the lower isthmus of the oviduct than in any other region of the female reproductive tract (19.7 X 103 ± 19.9 X 103 spermatozoa per lower isthmus) (Fig. 3; Table 1). A mean of —67.2% of the total number of spermatozoa in the female reproductive tract were located in this region (range 17-94%). Although the number of spermatozoa located in this region increased dramatically between early and mid August (Fig. 3; Table 1), peaking at —64.7 X 103 spermatozoa per lower isthmus on 20 August, this difference was not significant. This was the result of low sperm counts recorded in two mated females caught on 20 August, both of which contained fewer than 6.5 X 103 sperm per side, with less than 1.7 X 103 located in the lower isthmic region.

Data from captive mating studies suggest that the low sperm counts recorded in these two females may have resulted either from an interruption to mating or from a lack of full receptiveness of these two females at the time of mating, resulting in an early dismount. If these two values were excluded from the analysis, a significant difference (p < 0.05) was observed between sperm numbers found in the lower isthmus in early August and those located in this region of the duct on 20 August (Fig. 3).
