On 23 August, a further 2 (18%) of the females captured in this study that had mated but not yet ovulated were captured. The reproductive tracts of these females contained ~32.8 X 103 spermatozoa per side and ~5.1 X 103 spermatozoa per side, respectively (Fig. 3). Sperm Distribution in the Female Tract Across the Mating Season
The distribution of spermatozoa in the female reproductive tract differed significantly (p < 0.001) across the mating period. Sperm number in the lateral vagina of all mated females caught was low (1.2 X 103 ± 1.1 X 103 spermatozoa per lateral vagina) (Fig. 3; Table 1), accounting for approximately 15% (range 0-65%) of the total number of spermatozoa within the female reproductive tract (Fig. 3; Table 1). The maximum number of spermatozoa recovered from this segment of the tract in any one female was 4.2 X 103 spermatozoa per side, and the minimum was zero. Sperm numbers in the uteri were greater than those reported in the lateral vaginae (4.6 X 103 ± 7.0 X 103 sperm per uterus) but also varied considerably between animals and across the mating season (Fig. 3; Table 1).
