The remaining 11 (28.2%) of these females were found to have spermatozoa in the urine upon return to the laboratory, indicating that they had mated but not yet ovulated. The number of spermatozoa recovered from the reproductive tracts of these 11 females ranged from a minimum of — 1.7 X 103 spermatozoa per side early in the mating season to a maximum of —75.5 X 103 spermatozoa per side on 20 August (Fig. 3). Sperm number in the female reproductive tract exceeded 30.0 X 103 spermatozoa per side on five occasions, and all of these occurred between 20 and 23 August (Fig. 3). Only 2 of 24 females (—8%) caught by the middle of August (15th) had mated. These matings were detected in early August (6-8 August) and represented —18% of the total number of mated females caught (Figs. 2 and 3). The total number of spermatozoa in the reproductive tract of these animals was less than 10 X 103 spermatozoa per side (Fig. 3). No further matings were recorded then until 20 August, when a further 6 females, or 55% of the mated females in this study, were captured. The total number of spermatozoa in the reproductive tract of females at this time varied widely from —2.8 X 103 spermatozoa per side to —75.5 X 103 spermatozoa per side (Fig. 3), with a mean of —37.2 X 103 ± 26.4 X 103 spermatozoa per side.
