The changes in membrane PUFA composition were associated with some modifications of the characteristics of oxidative phosphorylation. Decreasing the n-6:n-3 PUFA ratio significantly reduced the rates (state III and IV) of oxygen uptake, whatever the free calcium concentration (Table 3). This was associated with a lower rate of CP production (Table 3). Conversely, the amounts in adenine nucleotides were moderately altered (Figure 1). ADP and AMP were not affected by the PUFA profile, whatever the free calcium concentration. ATP was not modified by the diet, except at the free calcium concentration of 0.5 |mM. In these conditions, ATP was present in lower amounts in the FO group.

The Caef on the oxidative phosphorylation in the two dietary groups is shown in Table 2 and Figures 1, 2 and 3. The increase in free calcium concentration from 0.34 to 0.50 mM was associated with a reduction of the state IV respiration rate only in the SSO group. In the FO group, this parameter remained unchanged. A significant CI (P<0.05) was also observed for ADP. When the free calcium concentration was null, the ADP was higher in the FO group in the first minute following the addition of ADP-Mg2+. A similar CI (P<0.05) was also found for ATP, reflecting mainly the lower ATP content in the FO group at the free calcium concentration of 0.5 mM. The effect of free calcium on the energy production was similar in the different dietary groups. Conversely, the mitochondrial metabolic efficiency remained higher in the FO group when the free calcium concentration was adjusted to 0.34 mM.
